21st March 2018 Don Davis

G B Postal history with a difference.

Our guest speaker gave a really comprehensive history of our postal system ranging from Pre-stamp covers and envelopes and the many different combinations experienced during their use to a study of modern forgeries. Some forgeries were quite crude examples while others needed an experts eye to reveal their attempt at deception.

Every aspect of postal history was explored with many unique examples on show including letters from William Shakespeare pictured here.

June 20th - Loraine Maguire: The ships that linked New Zealand , Australia and UK

Loraine gave another insight into the history of Australia and New Zealand and its transport system with Ships on this occasion. Lorain’s history started in 1837 and the Peninsular and Oriental shipping Co. latter known as P and O. Shipping was mainly for cargo and mail; but rapidly came to be used for passengers with greatly reduced fares to get people to colonise the relatively newly discovered country.

In the early 1900s new arrivals from the UK were known as the £10.00 P.O.M. . Nearly all the ships left from Tilbury Postcards of the ships throughout the transitionary period of P and O to Oriental Line back to P and O were shown. A unique insight into the shipping of the time.

17th January 2018. A Visit from the St Albans and Harpenden Philatelic Society.

John Swade was the first to display showing some of his comprehensive collection of stamps posters and other ephemera of the Columbian Great Exhibition which ran from 1st May to 30th October 1893.

After the break Peter Mellor gave a display of postcards sent to doctors everywhere from Pharmaceutical distributors dating from 1947 under the heading of Dear Doctor.

Our members were intrigued by the amount of work that had been put into both displays and congratulated both guests for producing such fascinating material.
