November 16th 2016 Fin O’Donoghue
Liechtenstein
Fin started his display with a poem about stamp
collecting followed by a brief description of
Liechtenstein, Among the interesting facts were
that the country has kept its name since 1136,
it is one of the smallest countries in the world
with a population of 37,000. His display
included most of the issues of the country with
Covers, blocks and sheets.

For the second half Fin explained that now his
collection of issues was complete he now
collected philatelic souvenir items from the
various exhibitions held in this tiny country
including the 15 International shows. Fin ran a
10 question quiz for the evenings show with
every member scoring 10 out of 10. prizes of
Liechtenstein stamps were awarded to two lucky
members who’s entries were selected from the
pile

November 9th
Three members of our society gave displays at
Bedford. Richard Page. Bird Covers. John
Spencer. The Paddle steamers of the Bristol
Channel, and John Hossack Sierra Leone.

17th October
Three of our members. John Spencer, Richard
Page and John Hossack, visited the oxford
Philatelic society.

Richard and John recently visited our old
friends and members Geoff and June. Both were
well. Geoff has made a miraculous recovery from
his unfortunate illness, they were both pleased
to see us.

15th June 2016
Four members of the Ely society visited the
club today showing varied and interesting
displays including- Alan Hall, Observations of
Australian Philatelic Exhibitions which started
in 1905 to celebrate 50 years of the 5d diadem
stamp which had been unchanged throughout its
usage. Alan continued his display showing items
from various exhibitions up to 1938

Next Barry Ross-Bain showed us key first time
issues of Great Britain which covered unusual
characteristics, and physical variations. Barry
is depicted on the Smiller’s sheet issue. The
only sheet to depict Barry in existence.


Last on was Val Roberts showing her display of
Aboriginal people, the first inhabitants of
Australia, The first Issue to depict an
Aborigine was Issued in 1930, Since then most
issues concentrate on Aboriginal art,

May 18th
Our Society were pleased to welcome two members
of the Rushden Philatelic Society.
Bill Gibb who is president of the Mid Anglian
Federation showed a comprehensive array of Turks
and Caicos material and a brief history of the
Islands which were not officially adopted by any
country until 1766 when the Turks Islands became
a British colony and issuing its own stamps in
1867.
Terry pope displayed railway Letter and parcel
stamps from 1855 to 1948 which took many
different forms and patterns. Covering most
stations in the British Isles.
March 16th - Visit from Hitchin Philatelic
Society
The March meeting saw a good turn out with over
20 members and guests coming to enjoy Bob Hills
display of Aspects of south Africa. 1790 – 1961.
Bob started by showing early covers from the
cape Colony, many bearing unique cancelations
from villages and railway stations, The covers
gave a rare insight into South Africa’s
chequered history.
The second half covered Apartheid starting from
1840 with the first formal segregation of the
population through to the country we know today.
Bob revealed some shocking facts about
well-known figures of the time.
