LEIGHTON BUZZARD FORCES
POST OFFICE STUDY GROUP

This Group was formed in 1995, initially by a number of members of Leighton Buzzard Philatelic Society who had an interest in matters relating to Military Mail. Despite our name, membership is in no way limited to people living in the Leighton Buzzard area.

The object was to list, for record purposes, any items of information, with pictures where relevant, relating to Military post, field post offices, mail from various war areas and similar information. There were to be no geographical limitations of the information - it just depended and still does, on what comes to hand.

A wide range of subjects have been covered from the Boer war to peace-keeping forces in Yugoslavia, from mail from Concentration camps to First Day covers apparently issued in Berlin at the height of the Battle of Berlin in 1945.

No meetings are held by the Group - but four quarterly Bulletins are published each year. The 'year' runs from September to June with an annual subscription of, currently, £4.00. per annum including postage within the U.K. A slight increase is made to cover postal costs to overseas destinations, with subscription payable in Sterling.

Each Bulletin consists of twelve A4 pages and is published in March, June, September and December.

Items covered have included a listing of initials and their meanings, numbers and locations of British F.P.O. offices, British Forces Post Offices special covers issued in the post-war years and research into the content of soldier's letters. This has included tracing and illustrating the location of special billets from WW1 locations, together with their history. We have even produced a special cover of our own.

Articles have covered WWII airfields, QSL radio cards and Naval ships "crossing the line".

Interest has been shown by genealogy groups in some of our articles, where our interests seem to overlap.

Back numbers of Bulletins are available at £1.00. each, post paid to U.K. addresses. Postage charged extra for overseas destinations. Free sample copy on request
